Hey, just throwing out some ideas I had for the server going forward.
The first would be to have at least two player factions straight out the gate. The first would be something closer to the "nexus" an overall diplomatic faction that lives on a ship and represents the basic ss13 approach in terms of its general roles. They are space travellers looking to explore and research the galaxy and make some money to help bankroll their expedition, they are backed by a goverment or corporation back home. I guess they are like the federation from star trek.
The second faction would be a more rugged, militaristic group. Lorewise they could perhaps be a fragile alliance of different groups. A mix of junkers, pirates and just random people who seperated from other places. They have less of an organised internal structure, perhaps better for experienced players who want to go in without much of a defined framework at all.
The map would have a main planetary area with a ship orbiting above, the first faction starts on the ship, the second on the planet. The resources in space are mostly different to those found on the planet so one faction cant gather them all without having to interact with the other in some way. This could maybe encourage developments like a trading post, customs searches or outright hostile approaches between the factions.
Expeditions could become a key part of the content and higher end resources could be contained in dangerous areas of the planet. Examples would be lava caves with high temperatures and dangerous creatures or out in some freezing snowy area. Effectively forcing the players to take the right skillsets and equipment if they want access to the materials they require. Have some of them placed in space or on seperate z levels you have to take a gateway or portal to, keeps things easier to manage and delete if there needs to be server space freed up. Skills would be chosen on character creation and your character build would lock you into certain gameplay. Players would have to work together to get things done.
I would also like the see more taking place outside of player interactions. Antagonists, events and things like serious engineering faults, fires and depressurisation happening. Keeps people on their toes and stops the day to day gameplay getting too stale. Allow science roles to go a bit more crazy, perhaps letting some savage alien on board the ship or something. Stories between players are obviously the main point of the server, but there could be more mechanical involvement and things to talk about in between the big player stories taking place.
